About: Why you should love statistics | Alan Smith
Learning how statistical mathematics and knowing some statistical facts are not the same god damn thing. He starts of saying that within mathematics, statistics is under appreciated, but then he doesnr talk about statistics, normal distributions, standard deviation.... nothing. if his goal was to convince people studying mathematics that statistics was interesting he avoided talking about it
So, the point of all of this appears to be that generally-speaking, people [whether they have numeracy or not] are out of touch with many of the factors that are shaping their lives whether being enquired upon locally or on a wider geographical scale. Americans appear to be particularly unaware at one end while the Japanese are much more in touch. Interestingly, the crime statistics for these two countries are also completely at odds wherein Americans have 43 murders per day on average while Japan has 0. The Japanese are famous for the effort they put into education and for their dedication to their work. Americans not so much. Then again, some half of Americans think that Donald Trump is a wonderful man and leader. This can only be accounted for by the fact that the American educational system sucks. Life in the goldfish bowl of Fox News seems to be enough for a gullible public. Facts concerning Trump's morals, business standards, personality traits and the general odium of his behavior on the world stage do not count for much. The professional morons out there still love him. So helping to win the hearts and minds of yokels with facts, statistics and critical reporting is of no consequence. Being in possession of the truth of anything does not necessarily result in any advances. As Mark Twain, America's most brilliant observer of the human species once said: 'never argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience"! Truth, Justice and The American Way are now statistical anomalies.
I was on holiday in a shopping mall in Denver and was asked if I would like to answer a few statistical questions? My answer was no thank you, can't be bothered, but more importantly, as an English tourist, my knowledge of American products and services is negligible.
Doesn't matter, replied the beautiful young lady with the big smile and the pen, you get 10 dollars and it takes about 10 minutes. So I came away 10 dollars richer and the interviewer added one more successful set of statistics to her tally that day.
Alan Smith describes statistics as a Science. 'The 'Science' of dealing with data' is what he calls it, and attempts to give it some credibility by aligning it with Mathematics.
It mostly depends what you ask, and who you choose to ask, which makes it about as credible as astrology is to an astronomer.
Come to think of it your daily Horoscope is probably more scientific.
What possibly could I write an article on statistics? I got this assignment and I'm struggling with the topic
It’s growing on me! I really like it!
why do we need to know the percentage of households with mortgage? is that really matter?
Please try to give subtitles
Statistics is not a branch of mathematics as wikipedia and this guy say. Statistics is a science on its own, which makes use of mathematical tools to get its points across, just like physics does. Now, probability theory is a branch of math because it has been structured in such a way it is an axiomatic tree.
hate math love statistics
Saudi figures may be somewhat skewed by how a high proportion of the residents are "guest workers" who aren't counted as really being there. "Officially".
Proud being a Korean:)
I did not think it was possible for statistics to be more boring. I was wrong.
Great talk, thanks.
Maybe the problem is the teaching methods you morons...
